FAQ

Do you have any questions?
We have the answers

Why is there a main inspection?

So that all road users can participate in road traffic as safely as possible. The general inspection ensures that your car is working as it should. This protects you and other road users.

What is a main inspection?

The main inspection is also known under the abbreviation HU. This is a regular inspection (general inspection) of motor vehicles, which is clearly regulated by law. This type of vehicle inspection has been established since December 1, 1951. If significant deficiencies or dangerous deficiencies are identified, they must be remedied. It is then mandatory to present the vehicle again within one month. If it is determined during the main inspection that the vehicle is no longer roadworthy, the inspector removes the test sticker. You can no longer drive with this motor vehicle! In this case, a certificate that you have deregistered the vehicle is also required.

What is everything checked during the general inspection?

Brakes Wheels and tires Chassis exhaust systems Frame and body Steering discs and mirrors Lighting and electrical system Equipment such as warning light, warning triangle, first aid kit and wheel wedges Pedals, seats and seat belts Electronic safety systems

How can you tell when your vehicle has to go to the next general inspection (HU)?

After three years after initial registration, the time has come: The car has to go through a general inspection. After that, the appointment is due every two years. This is clearly regulated and there are no exceptions in this regard. But how do vehicle owners know when the HU is due? You can find all the necessary information on the registration certificate part I, which was formerly known as the vehicle registration document. There is a stamp here which indicates the date of the next HU. So if you're not sure, you can simply take a look at this document. You can also find the due date of the next general inspection on the HU sticker, which is affixed to the rear license plate. In the middle is the year of the next general inspection and the month in which it is due is at the top. An even easier way to find out when your main inspection (HU) is due: Let yourself be easily reminded by Get Your Badge! Simply enter your email address and your next HU appointment. So you won't miss a main inspection anymore.

General motor vehicle inspection

As a motor vehicle, the car must be tested regularly. In order to be able to participate safely in traffic, the main inspection (HU) is therefore mandatory. Find out now when the general inspection (HU) is due, what the inspection interval looks like for cars and what else you need to know. When is the next general inspection due? New cars must go through their first inspection after 36 months. The following tests must be carried out every 24 months. If you're not sure when the next HU needs to be carried out, you can take a look at your license plate. It is at 12 o'clock in which year the next main investigation is due. How often does the main car inspection take place? Every two years, the car has to go to a general inspection. You can easily have testing organizations remind you of the appointment. What is being investigated at Auto-hu? There is a disassembly-free visual inspection as well as a functional and functional test of all components that play a role in road safety. How long does the main car inspection (HU) take? A normal main inspection takes around 30 minutes. However, the duration may vary between test centers and depending on the deficiencies. What everything to bring to the general car inspection (HU)? The following documents are required for the main inspection of each type of vehicle: Vehicle registration document or registration certificate Part I for deregistered vehicles: Vehicle certificate or registration certificate Part II during a follow-up inspection: Inspection report from the previous HU possibly test certificates or confirmation of change acceptance of attachments In addition, your car must be equipped with a first-aid kit that is not older than 5 years old, a warning triangle and high-visibility vests.

Motorcycle general inspection

Motorcycles also have to go to the main inspection regularly. This applies to motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cc Motorcycles with a maximum design speed of over 45 km/h When is the HU required for motorcycles? Motorcycles must go to a general inspection every 24 months. Here, too, your testing organization will be happy to remind you of the upcoming appointment. How often a general inspection of a motorcycle? The general inspection of motorcycles is carried out every two years. What is being investigated at Motorrad-HU? During the general inspection (HU), all functions and safety-relevant components of the motorcycle are checked. Testers check the steering and braking functions and the functions of the electronic safety assistant as part of a test drive. The technical check includes the following aspects: General vehicle condition Lighting Electrical equipment Wheels and tires Drive, frame, chassis, attachments Brakes Steering How long does the motorcycle HU take? The HU on a motorcycle usually takes just as long as on a car. It's best to take 30 minutes. What everything to bring to Motorrad-HU? So that the inspectors can carry out the main inspection, you should have the following documents with you: Registration certificate Part I Registration certificate part II Proof of changes and additions

How much does a general inspection cost?

The costs for a main inspection vary depending on the vehicle: Car: 150€ Motorcycle: 86€ Trailer: 42€ The costs for your HU without an emissions test are slightly cheaper. However, you must arrange for an emissions test elsewhere, as this is also mandatory: Car: 97€ Motorbike: 61€

What is an emissions test?

Anyone who drove a car before 2009 certainly remembers it: There was once a hexagonal test sticker on the front license plate, which recorded the results of the emissions test (AU). This sticker no longer exists — but emissions testing is still mandatory. Is the exhaust gas test automatically included in the general inspection? The exhaust gas test is part of the main inspection. Is it therefore automatically included? In fact, the emissions test was abolished as a separate test in 2010. It is now an integral part of the main investigation (HU). However, when booking an appointment with most testing centers, you can decide whether you want to combine HU with AU or not. The AU can also be carried out independently of HU. A separate certificate is issued, which vehicle owners can request after the test. To ensure that the emissions test is still valid at the time of the main inspection, it must not have been more than one month ago. It must also be carried out by an approved workshop. How much does the emissions test cost? The cost of an AU varies from region to region. Here, you should always ask the local inspector for individual prices. It is best to combine the emissions test with the general inspection. What is checked by the auditor of the audit organizations? All motor vehicles that require approval and are equipped with a diesel or gasoline engine must undergo an exhaust gas test (AU). It is checked whether specified limits for defined measurement variables are met. In gasoline engines, it is therefore measured whether the carbon monoxide (CO) content is within limits and what the fuel-air mixture (lambda) is doing. In diesel engines, the flue gas turbidity (absorption coefficient) is measured. Since January 1, 2018, there has been a tailpipe measurement for all vehicles subject to AU requirements. And since January 1, 2021, there should be particle number measurement in diesel-engined vehicles. However, due to a lack of work steps, this will be delayed by one year, so that this examination should take place until July 1, 2023, as set out in the Road Traffic Approval Code. The reason for the emissions test is that the environmental compatibility of exhaust gases can be controlled. In doing so, legislators want to curb environmental pollution.

What happens when the main inspection is over?

Road users should avoid exceeding the deadline for the HU as far as possible. The legislator has no mercy here. Therefore, if you notice that it is time to subject your vehicle to the HU, you should make an appointment as soon as possible. What is the main investigation (HU) deadline? If your badge has expired for more than two months, an in-depth review must be carried out. In terms of price, this represents a premium of around 20% of the costs. The new deadline is then 24 months after the last examination date. What are the possible penalties? If you get into traffic control with an expired sticker, it can end badly for you. From a warning money to a hefty fine to points, anything is possible. Therefore, avoid taking part in road traffic if possible with an expired test sticker. The fines and penalties for expired stickers are the same for cars and motorcycles: 2-4 months: €15 fine 4-8 months: €25 fine more than 8 months: €60 fine + one point in Flensburg It can be tricky, especially if you are involved in an accident. If your inspection sticker has expired at the time of the accident, you can be prosecuted by your car insurance company.
