The safety inspection (HU) is required by law in Germany — and at regular intervals. But when exactly is it your vehicle's turn? Here is a simple overview:
- New car (passenger car): The first HU is due after 3 years.
- All other HU appointments: After that, you have to take the exam every 2 years.
- Motorbikes, trailers, motorhomes: Also every 2 years — regardless of age.
- Vintage cars with H license plates: HU is also carried out every 2 years, but in accordance with §23 StVZO.
You can tell the exact HU date by the colored HU sticker on the back license plate: The number in the middle shows the year, the number at the top shows the month of the due date. You can also check the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document).
Tip: With HolDeinePlakette, we are happy to remind you by email or text message when your next HU is coming up — free of charge and reliably.
Important: If you skip the deadline, you may face fines and possibly points in Flensburg — so it's better to book early! Preferably a few weeks before the sticker expires in order to have enough buffer for repairs or repair of defects.
